How to tell if food is halal
Most packaged food doesn’t say whether it’s halal. Here’s a simple way to check any product — and the common mistakes, like assuming kosher or vegetarian means halal.
Updated October 18, 2026
1. Look for halal certification
A halal certification symbol means an independent body has checked the ingredients, their sources and the production process. It’s the most reliable sign. Certifiers differ in their standards — for example on stunning or machine slaughter — so if that matters to you, check which body certified the product.
2. Check for clearly haram ingredients
- Pork in any form: pork, lard, bacon, ham, pepperoni, salami, prosciutto. Is pepperoni halal?
- Alcohol: wine, beer, rum, brandy, liqueur, added ethanol.
- Gelatin without a halal source. Is gelatin halal?
- Blood and blood products.
- Insect-derived additives: carmine (E120) and shellac (E904) — scholars differ.
3. Watch for doubtful ingredients
Some ingredients can be plant- or animal-derived, and labels rarely say which. These are mushbooh (doubtful):
- Natural flavors and vanilla extract
- Mono- and diglycerides (E471), polysorbates, DATEM
- Enzymes and rennet in cheese and whey
- L-cysteine (E920) in bread, glycerin, stearates
Common mistakes
| Assumption | Why it’s not enough |
|---|---|
| “It’s kosher, so it’s halal” | Kosher allows alcohol (like wine) and its slaughter rules differ from halal. |
| “It’s vegetarian, so it’s halal” | Vegetarian food can contain alcohol, vanilla extract or carmine. |
| “No pork listed, so it’s fine” | Pork can hide in gelatin, E471, L-cysteine or enzymes. |
| “It’s beef, so it’s halal” | Beef is only halal for many Muslims if the animal was slaughtered Islamically. Dhabiha vs. standard |
4. Or let a halal scanner check it
Halal Pal Scanner runs this whole checklist in seconds: scan the barcode or the ingredient list and it shows Halal, Mushbooh or Haram, highlights each flagged ingredient and explains why. How to scan food for halal
Frequently asked questions
Is kosher food halal?
Not automatically. Kosher rules allow some things halal doesn’t — notably alcohol such as wine — and kosher and halal slaughter requirements differ. Check the ingredients or look for halal certification.
Is vegetarian food always halal?
No. Vegetarian products can still contain alcohol, vanilla extract or insect-derived additives like carmine.
What is the easiest way to check if food is halal?
Look for a halal certification symbol. If there isn’t one, scan the barcode or ingredient list with a halal scanner app, which checks every ingredient for you.
